Friends of the SF Mandarin School is a parent-led community group working with the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) to launch a Mandarin Immersion K-8 public school. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the limits we place on how it is shared. We aim to collect only what we need and to treat your information with care.

What We Collect

We collect information you choose to give us through forms on this website:

  • Interest form: parent name, email address, home address, phone number (optional), children's names and dates of birth, and whether you are interested in volunteering or donating.
  • Follow-up form: areas where you may be able to contribute skills or connections (for example, legal, finance, community organizations, media, or education).
  • Subscribe form: email address only.

We also collect basic, anonymous usage data through Google Analytics (such as pages visited and general location) and the source of your visit through standard URL tracking parameters. This helps us understand which outreach efforts are reaching families. We do not use this data to identify you personally.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information you provide to:

  • Demonstrate parent demand for a Mandarin Immersion K-8 school to SFUSD.
  • Understand where interested families live, so we can help plan catchment and enrollment zones.
  • Send you updates about the school effort and related opportunities to help.
  • Coordinate volunteer support and community outreach.

Sharing With SFUSD

Because our purpose is to help SFUSD launch this school, we share information with the district. We do this carefully and with strict limits:

  • We share aggregate and anonymized data with SFUSD — for example, the total number of interested families, grade-year distributions, and anonymized address data to help map where interested families live.
  • We do not share individual contact information (names, email addresses, phone numbers, or home addresses) with SFUSD or anyone else unless we have your explicit permission.
  • We do not share data with any other school district, vendor, or third party beyond the tools listed in the next section.

Children's Information

We ask for children's names and dates of birth so we can understand grade-year demand and plan for school capacity. We treat this information with extra care:

  • We collect this information from parents and guardians only. We do not knowingly collect any information directly from children.
  • Our website and forms are not directed to children, and we do not market to children.
  • Children's information is never published on this website or shared publicly.
  • It is shared with SFUSD in aggregate form only (for example, counts by grade year).
  • We do not use children's names for any purpose other than deduplication and internal planning.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe we have inadvertently collected information directly from a child, please contact us at info@sfmandarinschool.org and we will delete it.

Third-Party Services

We use a small number of trusted third-party services to run this website, store form submissions, send email updates, understand website usage, and analyze data to support the school launch effort. These services are chosen for their reliability and standard privacy practices.

We use these services under their standard terms and configurations, and we limit data sharing to what is necessary to operate this website, communicate with families, and analyze information to advance our work. These services have their own privacy practices, which govern how they handle information on their platforms.

How We Protect Your Information

We take reasonable administrative and technical steps to protect your information. Form submissions are transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Access to the underlying data is restricted to a small number of volunteer organizers with named accounts. We use established third-party services under their standard terms to store and process information on our behalf. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to reduce risk and respond quickly if issues arise.

What We Will Never Do

  • We will never sell your information.
  • We will never share your information with advertisers or unrelated organizations.
  • We will never use your information for marketing unrelated to the Mandarin Immersion K-8 school effort.

How Long We Keep Your Information

We retain your information through the school launch process and the initial enrollment period. After that, we will review our records and delete or anonymize information we no longer need. Aggregate, anonymized data (such as counts or zone distributions) may be retained indefinitely for historical and planning purposes.

Your California Privacy Rights

We are a California-based community group, and many of the families who share information with us are California residents. Regardless of whether the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) formally applies to us, we voluntarily honor the following rights for all families:

  • Right to know what personal information we have collected about you.
  • Right to delete your personal information.
  • Right to correct inaccurate personal information.
  • Right to non-discrimination — we will not treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.
